About Crystal Lei

Crystal Lei (she/her) is a counsellor based in Edinburgh.

My Approach

I hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy with Distinction from the University of Edinburgh. Trained in the traditions of person-centred and psychodynamic approaches, I practise as a psychodynamic and humanistic counsellor.

This means I have an awareness of how the past informs the present, shaping our identity and ways of relating with others and the world through a variety of experiences, both past and present. Some of these experiences are etched vividly in our memory, while others are buried deep within the recesses of our consciousness. They all contribute to the complex tapestry of who we are as a person. By understanding these dynamics, we unlock the door to change or acceptance.

My approach is also deeply relational, which means I believe that the therapeutic space is co-created by us together. I show up as a real human being - imperfect, with my own feelings and fallibility. I also believe the therapeutic relationship is part of the healing process, which means I use my experience of the dynamics of our relationship to deepen the therapeutic work, bringing authenticity and engagement rather than being a blank screen.

My approach, which is firmly rooted in trust, compassion, and a deep understanding of your unique journey, will enable you to feel truly seen and heard, as we work together to navigate the complexities of your inner world and relationships.

Experience

My passion for trauma began with my own personal therapy, and my work at the Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre, supporting survivors of sexual trauma. Over time, I came to understand how trauma impacts both the body and mind, and learned how to offer empathy and a safe space for individuals to process the overwhelming emotions trauma brings, and reclaim their sense of self.

I also worked at a University Student Counselling Service in Edinburgh, supporting clients with a wide range of mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, grief, and relationship difficulties.

I have a deep interest in childhood development and the ways early experiences shape our identity, personality and relationships. Through Place2Be, I gained valuable experience working with children at an Edinburgh primary school.

I’m an immigrant and understand what it feels like to be different, and to be an outsider, trying to fit in and belong. Living in different cultures and speaking multiple languages has shaped me into someone with openness, flexibility and a deep appreciation for every person's uniqueness.

In addition to English, I also offer sessions in Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese.

What can you expect in therapy with me?

During our sessions, we will delve into the history of your issues, your experience and emotions in a gentle way and at your own pace. Through this process, you may feel relieved, know yourself better, learn to be yourself and gradually improve.

Sessions last 50 minutes. For therapeutic reasons, I recommend we meet weekly (read my blog about this here). The duration of the therapeutic work will be discussed and agreed upon by us in an ongoing and collaborative process.

I work with people both long-term or short-term. We will regularly review our work together and ideally, we will agree on the ending and work towards it accordingly.
